Abstract
Since the beginning of 2012, Nicholas Orem has been slowly moving towards becoming more environmentally friendly. As part of the Prince George's County Public Schools' Transforming Education through Digital Learning (TEDL) initiative, Nicholas Orem was awarded enough I-pads so that each student and teacher had there own to use during the course of the school day. In the 2013-2014 academic year, Nicholas Orem began its partnership with the Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) by bringing the Rice Rangers program to Mr. Leonard's classroom. Since that time, the AWS has helped with may projects around Nicholas Orem, most notably, the courtyard revitalization. Since then, the culture of Nicholas Orem Middle School has changed for the better. Through AWS, the courtyard is now at a point in which it can be used to hold outdoor classes. The Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) Academy is now having their Challenge Based Learning Projects incorporate some aspect of environmental Education or environmental literacy into them. For this academic year, Nicholas Orem is one of a few schools that is participating in the test wild rice project that will be incorporated into the 7th grade curriculum.
