Objective 2.2: Energy Conservation
The Nicholas Orem Middle School GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science) Program in May of 2013 partnered with Geoff Stack of Alliance to Save Energy's Green Schools Program to learn about energy conservation. The GEMS program is an after-school enrichment program that meets twice a month during the school year for girls interested in math and science in grades 6-8. The students worked after school with Geoff and students from the University of Maryland to market energy conservation to both staff and students as well as conduct an energy audit. The students created a website to show the staff what they have done with marketing energy conservation and the results of the energy audit.
Here is the link to the website that the students created: Nicholas Orem GEMS Energy Reduction
When you view the site here is what you will find:
-Under the "Energy Reduction ACTION" tab is where the students placed pictures of them informing teachers what energy using devices were left on or open windows once they left for the day. Also, there are pictures of the bulletin board and signs that the students created to inform students why energy conservation is needed.
-Under the "Learning About Energy" is where students placed pictures of them learning about energy conservation and why it is important to conserve energy. In addition the students showcased the tools that they got to use for conducting the energy audit.
-Under the "School Energy Audit" tab, students placed video of them conducting the audit as well as their findings and recommendations to the staff. The GEMS students presented their findings to the staff as to what they found, how to correct the findings, and why it is important.
